Muddy Boot Award Celebrated
Strata-G celebrated the award of ETEC’s Muddy Boot to Steve McCracken, former manager of DOE’s Oak Ridge Office of Environmental Management. Steve contributed to the cleanup mission at several DOE sites, notably Fernald and Mound, OH; but the project that led to success in cleaning up ETTP, the first of a nuclear gaseous diffusion site in history and the largest environmental project in the DOE complex, was a simple haul road. Steve’s idea of building a dedicated road to route heavy trucks bearing thousands of loads of contaminated material from ETTP to the onsite landfill kept the public and the environment safe. The Muddy Boot was well-deserved.

Outstanding Sustainability Project in Oak Ridge
Strata-G celebrated DOE’s Oak Ridge Environmental Management Program and its cleanup contractor, UCOR, for recognition of an outstanding sustainability project, the result of DOE’s largest-ever cleanup effort. Oak Ridge has transferred more than 1,200 acres of land and numerous buildings to the private sector for use in a multi-use industrial park with three solar fields located there together producing an average of approximately 1.7 megawatts of electricity annually. Oak Ridge also placed 3,500 acres of land into conservancy for protection of wetlands, flora, and fauna. Additionally, reuse and recycling have been central to the project. Over the last five years, more than 26.5 million pounds of demolition debris, 3 million pounds of scrap metal, 1.2 million pounds of paper and cardboard, 133,000 pounds of plastics, 95,000 pounds of electronics, and 235,000 pounds of universal waste were diverted from landfills.
