PROJECT HISTORIES

Transportation Services for 140m³ Mixed Waste Disposition Project
Strata-G provided transportation technical services to a privately owned mixed waste treatment facility in support of the 140m³ Project for a Department of Energy waste management contractor in Paducah, KY. Strata-G shipped more than 500 containers of mixed waste to the client facility for treatment. Responsibilities include: waste characterization; waste profiling; Department of Transportation (DOT) classification; container inspections; preparation of DOT/NRC shipping documentation; oversight of loading operations; and scheduling shipments into the client facility.

Spent Nuclear Fuel Shipments to Idaho National Engineering & Environmental Lab
Strata-G played an integral role in making five Department of Energy (DOE) Spent Nuclear Fuel (SNF) shipments from Oak Ridge National Laboratory to Idaho National Engineering & Environmental Laboratory by providing on-site technical expertise in engineering and transportation services. These services included: operation of remote video inspection equipment to independently verify SNF fuel loading; certification of the contents for containerized SNF and preparation of Fuel Receipt Criteria documentation; certification that the NRC-licensed TN-FSV Type B cask is compliant with all Certificate of Compliance requirements; performing leak tests of the TN-FSV cask containment boundary; preparation of NRC-741 Nuclear Material Transaction Reports; preparation of all shipping paperwork; labeling of the TN-FSV cask and transport vehicle; briefing the transport vehicle drivers and security escorts on the package contents and special requirements for the highway route controlled shipments; and serving as the shipper of record for all five shipments.

Shock Sensitive Shipping Campaign
Strata-G played an important role assisting a Department of Energy waste management contractor in achieving its Shock Sensitive Shipping Milestone. The milestone was to stabilize and ship all shock-sensitive material from the Oak Ridge Reservation prior to September 30, 2003. Strata-G’s role included: identification of unknowns; repackaging; inventory; stabilization; and characterization for shipment and disposal. Strata-G shipped more than 30,000 kgs (~1,000 energetic items) of Shock-Sensitive Waste during this project. As a result of Strata-G’s efforts, the client was able to achieve its Shock-Sensitive Waste Shipping Milestone.

Support to Department of Energy Waste Management Projects at Oak Ridge Reservation
Strata-G has provided transportation support to a Department of Energy waste management contractors on the Oak Ridge Reservation from 2001 to the present. While responsible for the shipment of radioactive material to the Nevada Test Site (NTS), Strata-G personnel generated paperwork and shipment documentation for NTS approval; supervised Oak Ridge National Lab (ORNL), Y-12, and East Tennessee Technology Park (ETTP) offsite shipments of non-radioactive RCRA, TSCA and industrial waste; identified and generated RCRA, TSCA and industrial waste inventories that were close to exceeding 180 days from out of service date for all three sites; coordinated with offsite vendors to ship RCRA, TSCA and industrial waste offsite (included developing profiles for waste and inspection of all manifests, LDRs and drum labels); interfaced with offsite vendors to ensure all waste was properly profiled for treatment and ultimate disposal; reviewed and approved invoices for offsite shipments; supervised Labpack Technicians for all offsite shipments; and ensured proper Department of Transportation (DOT) classification, DOT packaging/labeling and shipment documentation. As part of the Low-Level Waste (LLW) Shipping Campaign, Strata-G personnel prepared shipping documentation; provided DOT oversight of marking, labeling and packaging; reviewed waste profiles prior to shipping; scheduled outbound shipments; shipped LLW to Duratek, M&EC, BNFL, Impact, and Envirocare for sorting, segregating, and disposal; and performed intra-plant shipment throughout the ORR. LLW shipment statistics include 1,221,163 kg; 117,618 feet³; and 3,110 containers. Strata-G was also responsible for twenty (20) shipments of 20,000 to 40,000 lbs each of LLW from ORNL, Y-12 and ETTP sites to Envirocare of Utah, M&EC, Duratek, and Impact Services. Strata-G also assisted this client with its Mixed Waste Campaign. Responsibilities included: analytical data review; DOT classification; preparation of DOT/NRC documentation; container inspection; and oversight of shipment loading operations. Strata-G personnel also developed profiles for more than 500 containers that previously had no records in the Waste Information Tracking System (WITS) other than inventory reports, and shipped over 327,000 kg of mixed waste in more than 80 shipments.
